Teaching kindness with hands and feet is the only way of teaching kindness effectively. Yet many character education teachers never get to this point. Many teach this character trait without venturing past the shoreline of understanding into the deeper waters of action. They want students to know what it means to be kind, but they stop short of total immersion.

Teaching kindness is much like instructing students in mathematics.

Picture this. You are a mathematics teacher. You come to the point in the curriculum when you are to begin instruction about percentages. You decide that you will explain percentages to your students, but will not involve them. You will not have your students work actual percentage problems in class. You will put up posters on the wall that urge them to use percentages. You will talk about using percentages. You will not ask your students to do homework on percentages, however. In other words, you will never involve them in the actual work. Yet you will expect every student, at the end of that curriculum segment, to do percentage problems with ease.
